Very Honorable, The former prime minister of Nepal, Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal, was born on March 6, 1953, in the Rautahat district in Nepal. Before entering politics, he completed his studies in commerce at Tribhuvan University in 1973 and joined the Bank sector for Job.
In 1969, Mr. Nepal joined the communist movement as a member of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), which was founded by Pushpa Lal Shrestha. He participated actively in the first People's Movement and served on the committee that 1990 drafted the constitution of Nepal. He served as the leader of the opposition in the Nepalese parliament's upper chamber, the National Assembly, in 1991. He was appointed deputy prime minister in 1995 and handed power to the foreign and defense ministries in the Nepalese administration headed by prime minister Man Mohan Adhikari.
He has continued to play a significant role in Nepalese politics since 1995, including his time, spent serving as the opposition's leader in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002. He actively participated in leading the People's Movement, which defeated absolute monarchy in 2006, and helped to sign peace agreements with the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), kicking off a peace process to end the deadly internal conflict that had gripped the nation for more than a decade and claimed more than 13,000 lives.
Mr. Nepal served as the CPN (UMLGeneral )'s Secretary for more than a decade before stepping down in April 2008. Mr. Nepal joined the Constituent Assembly in 2009 and was chosen to lead the committee responsible for drafting Nepal's new constitution, the Constitutional Committee. On May 25, 2009, he was elected Nepal's prime minister.
