Political life and student life
After completing her secondary education in Bhojpur, Mrs. Bhandari went on to complete her higher education at Biratnagar, Morang. Her early years as a student in the Bhojpur hills were a crucial time in her life since it was then that the seeds of revolution and change were planted in her developing mind. She came to the conclusion that freedom and democracy are essential components of any developed society. She was already familiar with the struggles facing Nepali society at the time, which inspired her to dedicate herself to the leftist democratic movement opposing the despotic Panchayat government. This marked the beginning of her tough and protracted political path. She served as chair of the Eastern Regional Committee of the All Nepal National Free Students Union, an early indication of her socialist allegiance (ANNFSU).
Family Life
In 2039 B.S., Mrs. Bhandari wed Mr. Madan Bhandari, a well-known communist figure. President Bhandari's marriage lasted 11 years before it ended tragically in a mystery car accident. Usha Kiran and Nisha Kusum were reared by her alone when her husband passed away suddenly, and she also carried out her political duties appropriately.
Contribution to National Politics
Her formal political career began in 2036 B.S. as a member of the Communist Party of Nepal's (CPN) Youth League cadre, which was established in 2035 B.S. She later joined the CPN-aligned All Nepal Women Association (ANWA) (ML). Her political career has included roles as a student leader, a champion for women's rights, and a devoted member of the party committed to the principles of democracy and freedom. Mrs. Bhandari has tirelessly worked to protect women's rights and promote awareness of issues of gender inequality and injustice. President Bhandari was chosen to lead the All Nepal Women Association in 2055 B.S. She spearheaded several social and political activities for women's equality while serving as the chair of ANWA. After the elections for the Constitution Assembly (CA) in 2062–1963, she was the driving force behind the presentation of a special legislative resolution calling for 33% reservations for women in all spheres of government. This resolution was ultimately codified in the Constitution of 2072 B.S.
Her popularity and success as a political figure were demonstrated by her victories in back-to-back elections for the Constituent Assembly in 2063 and 2070 B.S., the parliamentary election in 2050 (held to fill the seat left vacant by the popular leader Madan Bhandari), and the midterm elections in 2051 B.S. and 2056 B.S. In addition, President Bhandari held the positions of Minister for Defense from 2010 to 2012 and Minister for Environment and Population in 1997. The management of former Maoist fighters gave the indigenous peace process, which is an example to the entire world, further momentum during her time as defense minister, which was a highlight of her term. She was a successful leader in developing the national security strategy.
She is an example to everyone because of the difficult route she took to rise from a modest childhood to the highest post in the nation.
