Search for “Nepali stand-up comedy” on Youtube and you will be flooded with suggestions of various channels and comedians. One of them will invariably be Apoorwa Kshitiz Singh. Apoorwa’s mini superstardom in the stand-up comedy scene is rising, thanks to the ever-increasing hits on the Youtube of his satirical take on the KP Oli government’s porn ban and of his self-mimicry of ‘Being a Madhesi’.

Apoorwa Khsitiz Singh, a stand-up comedian who was arrested on suspicion of insulting the Newar people, was released on bail on Thursday. Singh was granted freedom by the Kathmandu District Court today evening after his Rs 250,000 bail was paid. After the bail hearing, the court earlier today approved the release of Singh on a 250,000 rupee bond. Singh was the subject of a charge sheet from the Kathmandu District Attorney's Office that called for one to five years in prison for four criminal offenses. After many complaints were made against him for making offensive statements regarding the customs and culture of the Newar group during his standup comedy event, comedian Singh was taken into custody on August 28.
